Unfortunately, these lines and wrinkles are the most obvious sign of aging and something many of us strive to treat cosmetically.
Causes of Wrinkles & Fine Lines
Wrinkles form as a result of the aging process. As people age, skin cells divide more slowly, and the dermis (middle layer of your skin) begins to thin. The dermis has a network of elastin & collagen fibers which offer less support for facial expressions or movement as it thins. The result is deeper depressions on our faces, with age-related lines becoming visible. Finally, healing takes longer because there’s no elasticity left anymore – so any damage is typically permanent.
Another factor leading to wrinkles is excessive exposure to the sun. Utraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can result in premature aging and sun damage. Exposure to UV light breaks down collagen fibers and leads to the production of abnormal elastin. When UV damages skin tissue, your body produces metalloproteinase, which creates and reforms collagen fibers. This results in the disorganized formation of fibers known as solar elastosis, which are wrinkly.
Finally, the pollutants in your environment can cause your body’s collagen to break down as they enter your pores. The most common pollutants in your environment that cause wrinkles include particulate matter, soot, and nitrogen dioxide.
